How COVID-19 Affected the Mental Health of Children

Sleep Changes in Adolescents

Adolescents often undergo various sleep changes as they grow older. Caregivers have noticed that children younger than seven years old tend to have a higher frequency of nightmares compared to what is considered normal. On the other hand, teenagers are more likely to exhibit symptoms of sleep disorders, such as excessive sleeping or insufficient sleep. These changes in sleep patterns can be attributed to several factors, including increased screen time, negative caregiver behaviors, and a rise in domestic abuse cases.

Clinginess

Effects of the pandemic on children between the ages of three and six have been observed, showing an increased level of clinginess. Many children in this age group have developed concerns about being separated from their caregivers. This has resulted in an excessive need for updates on the pandemic or the health of their family members. Some caregivers have noticed that their children are more inclined to sleep in their beds and seek more frequent physical contact.
