Bruising and Swelling: Understanding the Healing Process
When an injury occurs, blood vessels in the surrounding tissue or bone can be damaged, resulting in the leakage of blood into the affected area. This leads to the formation of a bruise, which undergoes changes in size and color over the course of several days, indicating the healing process. As time goes by, the blood is gradually reabsorbed, causing the bruise to shrink and eventually fade away. However, it’s important to note that the disappearance of the bruise does not necessarily mean that the bone has fully healed, as bone healing generally takes a longer time.
In addition to bruising, swelling at the injury site may occur, which can be indicative of inflammation and potential infection. Moreover, the body’s natural response to an injury includes the build-up of fluid around the affected area, providing a cushioning effect. This fluid build-up begins almost immediately and tends to increase within the first few hours following the injury.
