Joint Hypermobility Syndrome: More Than Just Flexible Joints

Anxiety, Depression, and Fear

Individuals with hypermobility issues have a higher susceptibility to experiencing conditions such as generalized fear, anxiety, and depression. While the exact cause of these conditions is not fully understood, some experts posit that they may arise from a fear of exacerbating joint pain, although further research is needed to confirm this theory. To effectively cope with these conditions, many medical professionals and mental health specialists advocate for the implementation of cognitive-behavioral therapy as a means of management.

Understanding Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder

In 2017, the medical community implemented changes to refine the criteria for diagnosing Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Alongside these changes, a new concept called hypermobility spectrum disorder was introduced. This innovative diagnosis aims to distinguish between generalized hypermobility issues and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. While individuals with joint hypermobility syndrome mostly fit into this new category, many would now receive a more accurate diagnosis of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
