Malnutrition: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Micronutrient Deficiency: A Global Concern

Micronutrient deficiency, also known as micronutrient-related malnutrition, refers to the inadequate intake of crucial micronutrients like iodine, iron, zinc, vitamin A, and folate. These essential vitamins and minerals play a vital role in sustaining normal organ function and promoting overall health, development, and well-being. Notably, deficiencies in iodine, vitamin A, and iron are prevalent on a global scale, affecting over two billion individuals worldwide.

Understanding Overweight and Obesity

When a person carries excess weight, they may be classified as overweight or obese, which can be seen as a different type of malnutrition. To determine weight status, body mass index (BMI) is used. BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters. If an adult has a BMI higher than 25, they are considered overweight, while a BMI above 30 indicates obesity.
