Diagnosis of Temperaments in Ancient Times
In ancient times, the diagnosis of temperaments was based on the belief that individuals had an excess of one of the humors. This theory led to the identification of four temperaments. Hippocrates, a renowned Greek physician, introduced a scientific approach to diagnose these imbalances, which was considered groundbreaking during that period.
Hippocrates carefully observed individuals to identify their specific behaviors and recorded detailed notes. This method of assessment bears a striking resemblance to the modern-day practices used by medical and psychological professionals when evaluating patients and clients.
Treatment: Restoring Balance in Out-of-Balance Humors
In the ancient practice of humoral theory, the key to treating out-of-balance humors was to restore equilibrium. This involved a two-step approach, beginning with adjustments to the affected person’s diet, fitness regimen, personal hygiene, and even their surrounding climate. If these lifestyle changes failed to restore balance, the next course of action was medication. However, it is important to note that these “medications” often had toxic properties, which would induce severe illness in the individual. Curiously, the resulting symptomatic illness was taken as a sign that the humors were attempting to regain balance once again.
