Napping Hints for Babies, Newborn to One Year

Newborn Napping

Newborns are known to sleep for about 14 to 17 hours a day, and their sleep patterns are mainly influenced by their hunger levels. During the first few months of life, infants tend to sleep in stretches of three to four hours. After being awake for one to two hours, they usually need to sleep again. As babies reach the age of two months, they may start taking four naps throughout the day. Parents may observe that as their child reaches the three-month mark, the duration of these naps becomes shorter, with longer periods of wakefulness in between.

The Importance of Napping at Four to Six Months

As babies reach the four-month mark, their sleep patterns tend to change. They start sleeping for longer stretches at night and require fewer daytime naps. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, infants aged between four and 12 months need around 12 to 16 hours of sleep within a 24-hour period, including naps. Specifically, babies between four and six months old should have two to three naps each day to support their healthy growth and development.
