Napping Hints for Babies, Newborn to One Year

Napping Habits for Babies Aged Six to 12 Months

As babies grow older, their sleep patterns become more defined, allowing them to sleep longer during the night. Research indicates that daytime naps also become more consistent as children reach the age of six to 12 months. During this period, it is generally recommended for babies to take two naps, each lasting between one to two hours, to ensure they receive adequate rest. However, if a child is still taking a third nap later in the day, it is advisable to eliminate that nap at around nine months of age.

Nap Time Indicators

Recognizing when a baby needs a nap can be crucial for their well-being. There are several observable signs that suggest a baby is in need of rest. These signs include yawning, rubbing their eyes, tugging on their ears, staring off into space, and displaying drowsiness. Furthermore, crankiness, fussiness, incessant crying, or looking away from their caregiver are also indicators that the infant is tired and ready for sleep. It is important to note that some babies may exhibit fidgeting when tired, while others may refuse to eat.
