Uncommon Causes
There are several gastrointestinal conditions that may lead to a delay in passing stool shortly after birth. However, it is important to note that medical problems only account for constipation in less than 5% of children. Some uncommon causes of newborn constipation include lower intestinal obstruction, anorectal malformations, and small left colon syndrome. It is worth mentioning that congenital disorders such as cystic fibrosis, hypothyroidism, and Hirschsprung’s disease can also rarely result in constipation in newborns.
Effective Home Remedies for Newborn Constipation
When it comes to relieving newborn constipation, there are several simple home remedies that can help. Ensuring that your baby stays well-hydrated between feedings is essential in promoting regular bowel movements. It is advisable to avoid making sudden changes to your baby’s diet, such as switching from breast milk to formula or vice versa.
While juice is not recommended for babies under one month old, it can be a suitable option for babies between one and three months. However, it is important to note that the recommended amount of pear or apple juice should be limited to 1 ounce per day for each month of their age, up to three months. By offering a small serving of fruit juice twice daily, it can help draw fluid into the intestine and assist in facilitating bowel movements.
