Every type of Niemann-Pick disorder may present differently, but they all share similar symptoms that primarily target the organs impacted by the accumulation of lipids. When the disorder affects the nervous system, individuals may experience sensory and motor deficits.
Identifying the Characteristics of Type A or NPA
When it comes to diagnosing NPA, physicians typically identify the condition during infancy. There are several markers that can indicate the presence of Niemann-Pick disorder type A. These include failure to gain weight and grow at a normal rate, as well as the enlargement of the liver and spleen. Additionally, nervous system degeneration is another key symptom to watch out for. It is important to note that respiratory infection and failure are also potential complications associated with this disorder. Sadly, infants diagnosed with Niemann-Pick disorder type A often do not survive beyond infancy and rarely make it into early childhood.
