Operative and Diagnostic Hysteroscopies

Factors that May Prevent a Hysteroscopy

Although a hysteroscopy is generally a safe procedure, there are certain factors that may hinder its successful completion. These include having a bloated bladder, experiencing vaginal discharge, suffering from pelvic inflammatory disease, or having an inflamed cervix. These conditions can make it challenging to safely navigate the hysteroscope through the vagina and cervix. Additionally, it is not possible for pregnant women or those who may be pregnant to undergo hysteroscopy.

Preparation for a Hysteroscopy

When it comes to preparing for a hysteroscopy, the process is quite similar to getting ready for other medical procedures. If anesthesia is required, fasting may be necessary prior to the procedure. Alternatively, a sedative may be given by the doctor. It is important to schedule hysteroscopies after the woman’s last menstrual period and before ovulation to minimize vaginal discharge. Due to this, women are advised to diligently track their menstrual cycles to determine the most suitable time for the procedure.
