Bone Erosion and Fractures
Research published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery indicates that urate crystals have the potential to cause damage to the joints, which may ultimately result in fractures. Interestingly, these fractures are not limited to the initial site of gout manifestation. The study highlighted instances of foot fractures, patella fractures, and even the snapping of a prosthetic hip, all of which occurred due to weakened bones caused by an excessive production of urate crystals.
Kidney Stones: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
Kidney stones are solid masses formed by the crystallization of minerals in the kidneys. While they can be composed of various minerals, including uric acid, the development of kidney stones is often influenced by high levels of uric acid in the body. When these stones travel through the urinary tract, they can cause symptoms such as bloody urine and excruciating pain. In severe cases, immediate medical attention, such as a visit to the emergency room, may be necessary.
