Short and Long Term Complications of Gout

Kidney Failure – The Consequences of Uric Acid Crystal Build-Up

Uric acid crystals, besides forming as stones in the urinary tract, can also accumulate on the surface of the kidneys. The accumulation of these crystals not only leads to the formation of scars on the kidneys but can also have severe implications. If left untreated, this build-up of scars and uric acid crystals can ultimately result in kidney failure for the patient.

Link Between Gout and Dry Eye Disease

A new research study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine has revealed a strong association between gout and the development of dry eye disease. In fact, individuals who have been diagnosed with gout for an extended period of time are more prone to experiencing severe eye dryness. The study indicates that the longer a person has been suffering from this inflammatory condition, the greater the likelihood of experiencing extreme dryness in the eyes, potentially leading to dry eye disease.
