Signs of Hearing Impairment in Infants

Responding During Play

Testing a baby’s hearing can be done easily by doctors or even at home. One simple test involves engaging the baby in play with another object and then placing a flashing light or moving toy just out of their sightline. While the baby is occupied, create a noise near the hidden object. If the baby turns their head to locate the source of the sound, they are rewarded with a new object to play with. This not only helps assess their hearing ability but also encourages the baby to actively seek out the origin of sounds, reinforcing this behavior for the future.

Hearing Challenges in Various Environments

Children with hearing impairment may manifest signs only in specific settings. Consider a scenario where a child’s home environment is typically calm and tranquil. However, when they attend a bustling daycare facility, the increased noise levels might hinder their ability to perceive certain sounds. Therefore, it is crucial for guardians to communicate with caregivers in different environments to determine if their child experiences any challenges in social interactions, behavior, or language development.
