Spondylolisthesis and Back Pain

Spondylolisthesis is a condition characterized by the displacement of a vertebra in the spine. Unlike a slipped disc, which affects the tissue between the vertebrae, spondylolisthesis involves the actual bones. This condition primarily affects the lower back and can be caused by various factors. Fortunately, numerous treatment options are available to alleviate the associated back pain.

Degenerative Spondylolisthesis: Understanding the Most Common Type

Degenerative spondylolisthesis is a prevalent form of spondylolisthesis. As we age, the discs located between the vertebrae gradually lose their spongy texture, reducing their ability to effectively withstand spinal movement. Consequently, this increases the likelihood of the discs slipping out of their original position. While degenerative spondylolisthesis is generally uncommon in individuals below the age of 50, it is worth noting that most cases tend to be mild. Interestingly, the progression of the displacement does not appear to be correlated with the age of onset.

Isthmic Spondylolisthesis

Isthmic spondylolisthesis is a condition that arises from spondylolysis, another prevalent spinal issue. Spondylolysis occurs when stress fractures develop in the vertebrae, specifically in the slender section that connects the facet joints. These facet joints are responsible for enabling the spine to bend and twist. As these fractures weaken the bone, it becomes susceptible to slipping out of its proper position. Typically, the fifth vertebra in the lumbar spine is the most commonly affected site for this condition.
