Spondylolisthesis and Back Pain

Congenital Spondylolisthesis

Congenital spondylolisthesis is a condition that is present from birth. It occurs when the bones in the spine develop abnormally or due to a sudden injury, which can cause the vertebrae to slip out of place. This condition commonly affects children in the lower back area, specifically between the fifth lumbar vertebra and the first bone in the sacrum. It is worth noting that congenital spondylolisthesis is more prevalent in females, with a higher incidence rate compared to males.

Other Types

While the most common type of spondylolisthesis is degenerative spondylolisthesis, there are other less common types that can occur. One such type is traumatic spondylolisthesis, which is caused by a direct injury to the spine. This type of spondylolisthesis can occur as a result of a fall, a car accident, or any other traumatic event that causes damage to the spine.

Another less common type is known as pathological spondylolisthesis. This occurs when another underlying condition weakens the spine, leading to the vertebrae slipping out of place. These underlying conditions can include tumors, infections, or even osteoporosis, which can cause the bones to become brittle and fragile.

Lastly, there is post-surgical spondylolisthesis, which occurs when the slippage of the vertebrae gets worse after a surgical procedure. This can happen if the surgery was not successful in stabilizing the spine or if complications arise after the initial surgery.
