Erythema nodosum, also known as panniculitis, is a condition characterized by acute inflammation that typically occurs in the area surrounding the shins. However, it can also affect other parts of the legs and even develop on the arms. This condition arises due to inflammation of the layer of fat cells located just beneath the skin’s surface. While the cause of erythema nodosum is often unknown, it can sometimes indicate an underlying disease, such as Streptococcus or sarcoidosis. The treatment for erythema nodosum varies based on the severity and frequency of the symptoms experienced.
Signs and Symptoms
Erythema nodosum is typically characterized by the presence of painful and red nodules on the shins. These nodules can vary in size, ranging from 2 to 6 cm in diameter. Their edges are usually poorly defined and they are known to be red, hot, and firm to the touch. However, as time goes on, the nodules tend to become less firm and may even feel squishy when touched. As they gradually fade, they take on the appearance of a bruise and eventually turn yellowish before disappearing completely. It is worth noting that flu-like symptoms can sometimes occur before or simultaneously with the development of these nodules.
How long do nodules last?
The duration of each nodule is typically around two weeks. However, it is possible for new nodules to continue appearing for up to six weeks. As a result, the overall eruption period can extend to eight weeks or more if the underlying condition is not addressed or does not resolve on its own. While some individuals may only experience a few nodules, severe cases can involve the development of 50 or more. Fortunately, once the nodules have disappeared, they do not leave any scars or evidence of their presence.
