Symptoms and Treatment of Erythema Nodosum

Causes of Erythema Nodosum

Erythema nodosum eruptions can be triggered by various factors, including infections caused by streptococcal bacteria, mycoplasma pneumoniae, histoplasma capsulatum, Epstein-Barr virus, and other pathogens. Additionally, autoimmune disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease, sarcoidosis, and Behcet’s disease can lead to the development of these nodules. Certain types of cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, carcinoid tumors, and pancreatic cancer, have also been associated with eruptions of erythema nodosum. Furthermore, allergic reactions to medications have been known to cause outbreaks of this condition. In some cases, the underlying cause of erythema nodosum remains unknown.

Understanding the Development of Erythema Nodosum

Erythema nodosum is believed to develop as a result of a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to various pathogens and pharmaceutical substances. This reaction leads to an excessive production of antigens in the body. Interestingly, immune complexes are typically absent in the bloodstream of individuals with erythema nodosum, except for those who also suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
