Symptoms and Treatments of Intussusception

7. Treatment: Enema

Enema is the primary treatment option for young children diagnosed with intussusception. This procedure involves filling the colon with a contrast material that can be seen on an x-ray. Not only does this aid in confirming the diagnosis, but it also often resolves the issue itself.

8. Treatment: Surgical Intervention

When it comes to treating intussusception, surgery is often the recommended course of action. During the surgical procedure, the abdomen is carefully opened, allowing the surgeon to assess the situation. Initially, the surgeon will try to manually manipulate the intestine, attempting to gently return it to its original position. However, if this proves to be unsuccessful, the surgeon may opt for an alternative approach known as reduction. This involves using forceps to carefully separate and realign the affected segments of the intestine, with the aim of resolving the intussusception.
