In the field of medicine, doctors have the ability to extract synovial fluid from joints through a process known as needle aspiration. This procedure, also referred to as arthrocentesis or synovial fluid analysis, can be conveniently performed right in the examination room. Once the fluid is obtained, it is then sent to a laboratory or hospital for testing. This diagnostic procedure is crucial in identifying various conditions and injuries that affect the joints. Furthermore, it can also aid in the diagnosis of bleeding and inflammatory disorders that are more generalized in nature.
Injury
Hemarthrosis, or blood inside a joint, is commonly caused by injuries. When an injury occurs, the production of synovial fluid in the joint rapidly increases, leading to pain. Fortunately, the body has phagocytes, specialized cells that absorb the blood within a few days. However, if the synovial membrane is torn, fat may also enter the joint, which is more challenging for the body to remove. While minor injuries to joints can heal on their own, more severe injuries may necessitate medical intervention.
