The Types of Apheresis

Plasmapheresis: A Life-Saving Blood Separation Technique

Plasmapheresis, a remarkable medical procedure, involves the separation of blood and plasma using an apheresis machine. During this process, the plasma is carefully preserved either for later use as fresh frozen plasma or for the development of essential medications. Meanwhile, the remaining blood components are safely returned to the donor’s body. The utilization of fresh frozen plasma, derived from plasmapheresis, has proven to be highly effective in treating various conditions such as factor V deficiency, immunodeficiencies, and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Plateletpheresis

Plateletpheresis is a medical procedure that involves separating platelets from the blood, collecting them, and storing them for future use. This process is particularly beneficial for individuals with certain medical conditions, including AIDS, multiple myeloma, aplastic anemia, leukemia, hypersplenism, and sepsis. It is also commonly used for patients undergoing bone marrow transplants, radiation therapy, or organ transplants. Additionally, platelet transfusions are often utilized in surgeries such as cardiopulmonary bypass.
