Understand the Symptoms of Myelodysplastic Syndrome

Unusual Bleeding

Myelodysplastic syndrome can lead to a rare condition known as Thrombocytopenia, where the bone marrow produces insufficient platelets. When the platelet count drops below 150,000 platelets per microliter of blood, individuals may experience unusual bleeding that is difficult to stop. The compromised blood-clotting mechanism due to the lack of platelets makes them prone to easy and continuous bleeding.

Understanding Bruising and Petechiae

When the platelet count in the body is low, it can result in various symptoms, including frequent external bleeding, as well as the emergence of bruising and petechiae. Bruising and petechiae occur when minor internal bleeding takes place, typically caused by broken capillaries or blood vessels. As a result, individuals with a low platelet count may observe that they bruise easily and notice the appearance of tiny red-purple spots, known as petechiae, which tend to cluster randomly on their skin.
