Signs and Symptoms
Ameloblastoma, a benign tumor that occurs in the jaw, commonly does not cause any symptoms. However, in some cases, individuals may experience signs that are initially mistaken for other conditions. These signs include loose teeth, occasional or persistent bone pain, and lacerations of the inner lining of the cheek. Additionally, some people with ameloblastoma may feel an unexplained burning sensation in the mouth. The severity of symptoms varies depending on the aggressiveness of the tumor. In rare instances, painless swelling of the jaw can become life-threatening, particularly when it obstructs breathing by invading the nasal and oral airways.
Diagnosis
Identifying an ameloblastoma typically requires the expertise of a dentist, although it often follows unsuccessful treatments for similar conditions. Initially, the dentist may recommend antibiotics to alleviate jaw pain and swelling. If these measures prove ineffective, an X-ray is conducted to further assess the symptoms. To determine the precise cause, a bone biopsy is performed at a later stage. It is crucial to detect ameloblastoma early on, as it enhances the prospects of successful treatment.
