Understanding Ameloblastomas

What is Desmoplastic Ameloblastoma?

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma is a rare type of tumor that affects the tooth-bearing region and the alveolar, which is the bony ridge of the upper teeth. Despite its distinct characteristics, there have been fewer than 200 reported cases of this variety worldwide, making it easily misdiagnosed. The growth manifests as small nests of tumors infiltrating the affected area.

Treatment for desmoplastic ameloblastoma typically involves surgical excision of the affected tissue. This approach is commonly chosen by most doctors to effectively manage this type of tumor.

Multicystic and Unicystic Ameloblastomas

Ameloblastomas are tumors that can occur in the jaws and are classified into two main types: multicystic and unicystic. Multicystic ameloblastomas are known to be locally aggressive and can pose a threat to a person’s life if they obstruct vital tissues and organs, such as the nasal and oral airways. On the other hand, unicystic ameloblastomas are slow-growing masses that primarily affect the back of the mandible.

When it comes to the distribution of these tumors, multicystic ameloblastomas account for approximately 85 percent of all ameloblastoma cases. Unicystic ameloblastomas, on the other hand, make up around 10 to 12 percent of cases.
