Treatment: Exercise
Exercise as a Treatment for Chemo Brain
Engaging in physical and cognitive exercises can be highly beneficial for individuals experiencing chemo brain. Research indicates that physical exercise may be even more effective than mental exercise in improving cognitive function in these individuals. When we work out, our bodies experience a positive form of stress known as eustress, which triggers the release of hormones that promote a sense of well-being. In addition to physical exercise, practices such as meditation, computerized training, and engaging in games or puzzles can help enhance mental acuity.
Treatment: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a treatment approach that focuses on understanding how the brain works and learning effective strategies for acquiring new knowledge and implementing positive behaviors. This therapy equips individuals with tools to improve organization and memory. In a small study conducted in 2016 and published in the journal Cancer, researchers found significant improvements among breast cancer survivors who received a specific type of CBT called Memory and Attention Adaptation Training through videoconference technology.
