Other Known Carcinogens
Aside from cigarettes, there are several other substances that are known to be carcinogenic. Sunlight, specifically its ultraviolet rays, is considered a carcinogen and can increase the risk of skin cancer. Lead, a heavy metal, is also classified as a possible carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Additionally, asbestos, a material previously used in insulation and imitation-slate roofing, is another well-known carcinogenic substance.
Carcinogens Present in the Environment
Aside from the harmful effects of sunlight, there are several other substances present in our environment that have the potential to cause cancer in humans. One such substance is arsenic, which individuals may come into contact with through their drinking water. Although the quantities of arsenic in the water are not lethal, they can still harm our genetic structure. Another potential carcinogen that is not extensively studied yet is aristolochic acids, found in certain plants utilized in the production of herbal medicines. These acids have the potential to be carcinogenic, but more research is needed to confirm their exact impact.
