What are Demodex Mites?

Causes of Symptomatic Demodex Infestations

The exact mechanisms that lead to symptomatic Demodex infestations are not fully understood by experts. However, several theories have been proposed to explain the cause of these infestations. One theory suggests that the mites physically obstruct the hair follicle, while another theory suggests that they carry bacteria that can cause diseases. Another possible explanation is that the bodies of the mites, as they die, may trigger a hypersensitive or innate immune response in the affected individual. Additionally, it remains unclear whether the mites themselves directly cause the symptoms or if they simply prefer skin that is already experiencing issues such as rosacea.

Risk Factors for Demodex Infestations

When it comes to Demodex mites, there is still much to learn. However, certain factors suggest that larger populations of these mites can lead to more severe symptoms. One of the primary indicators of the risk of a Demodex infestation is age. Older individuals are at a significantly higher risk of having a substantial number of mites on their bodies. Additionally, individuals with weakened immune systems are more prone to harboring these mites, as their bodies are unable to effectively combat the growing populations.
