Diagnosis
Identifying a Demodex infestation can be challenging due to the mites’ small size, rendering them invisible to the naked eye. However, doctors employ various tests to diagnose this condition. Dermoscopy is a common method that involves examining the skin using a specialized instrument. Through dermoscopy, doctors can detect white structures that block the follicular openings, indicating a high number of mites. Another diagnostic approach involves conducting skin biopsies of hair follicles or performing KOH tests on skin scrapings. Both methods allow doctors to collect samples that can be examined under a microscope, revealing the presence of Demodex mites.
Treatments
When it comes to treating Demodex mites, the process is relatively straightforward since these mites can only survive on human skin and in hair follicles. The most effective treatments involve the use of acaricides, which are pesticides specifically designed to target ticks and mites. These acaricides can be found in various ointments, including creams containing salicylic acid, solutions containing benzyl benzoate, ointments with sulfur, and washes containing selenium sulfide, among others. It is worth noting that individuals with severe cases of Demodex infestation may require a prescription for stronger treatments that are not available over the counter.
