What are Dermoid Cysts?

Understanding Orbital Dermoid Cysts

Orbital dermoid cysts can be categorized as either deep or superficial. These cysts are frequently found in children and are considered the most prevalent type of orbital mass. Typically, they are identified before the age of 10 and are characterized by the presence of a painless lump adjacent to the eye. While superficial dermoids are relatively easier to diagnose, deeper dermoids may require more time for accurate identification and often result in bulging eyes.

Understanding Spinal Dermoid Cysts

Spinal dermoid cysts, although they do not spread, have the potential to exert pressure on the spinal nerves or the spinal cord. Gradually, as the cyst expands, various symptoms may arise, such as numbness in the arms and legs, incontinence, walking difficulties, and clumsiness. Considering the seriousness of these symptoms and the potential for rupture, surgical removal of these cysts is typically recommended by medical professionals.
