What are Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)?

Schistosomiasis: A Parasitic Infection Caused by Trematode Worms

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic condition that can manifest as either an acute or chronic illness. It is caused by trematode worms, and transmission occurs when larval forms of these worms penetrate the skin after contact with contaminated water sources. Once inside the body, the larvae undergo maturation. While some are expelled from the digestive system through natural elimination processes, others remain in the body’s tissues, leading to immune reactions and progressive organ damage. In an effort to control the spread of schistosomiasis, the World Health Organization (WHO) periodically administers anti-parasitic medication to at-risk populations.

Lymphatic Filariasis: The Devastating Impact of Elephantiasis

Lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis, is a debilitating disease caused by filarial parasites that are transmitted to humans through infected mosquitoes. While it may not manifest external symptoms in most cases, those affected unknowingly contribute to the further spread of this condition. When lymphatic filariasis progresses into a chronic state, it leads to the swelling of tissues, skin, and even the scrotum.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a staggering 856 million individuals across 52 countries are currently in need of preventive treatment to curb the proliferation of this disease.
