Biliary System Structure Problems
The biliary system, which includes the bile ducts, can sometimes have structural issues in certain individuals from birth. These variations can hinder the proper flow of bile, resulting in stools that have a distinct clay-like color. Some conditions, like biliary atresia, can cause noticeable symptoms right away, while others may not manifest any issues until later in life.
Gallstones
Gallstones are solid deposits that form in the gallbladder and bile ducts. They can vary in size, ranging from tiny grains to as large as a golf ball. However, it is the smaller gallstones that are typically more problematic. These tiny stones have a higher likelihood of getting stuck in the bile ducts, which can lead to complications such as acute pancreatitis – a condition characterized by inflammation of the pancreas. In addition to causing blockages, gallstones can also cause a range of symptoms including pain, nausea, and jaundice. It is important to be aware of these signs and seek medical attention if gallstones are suspected.
