What Causes Lupus?

Genetics

Although lupus is not solely caused by genetics, there is evidence of a genetic factor in its development. Scientists have discovered a specific genetic mutation in the TLR7 gene, which is responsible for toll-like receptors involved in the immune system’s response. This mutation seems to heighten the gene’s sensitivity, making it more prone to mistakenly attack healthy tissue.

Stress and Trauma

A study conducted by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital discovered a potential link between stress, trauma, and lupus. According to their findings, women with post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) had a three times higher risk of developing lupus. Interestingly, even women exposed to trauma without being diagnosed with PTSD had double the risk of developing lupus. It is important to note that the study primarily focused on white women, so further research is necessary to determine how these factors may affect women of color in relation to lupus.
