Pink Milk: Causes and Phenomenon
The color of breast milk can undergo variations due to various factors, including the mother’s diet and certain medications. One particular variation is known as pink milk, which has been associated with the consumption of beets. Additionally, a peculiar case report describes a baby whose urine turned pink whenever the mother consumed an orange juice containing artificial colors. Interestingly, certain prescription drugs such as clofazimine, rifampin, rifabutin, rifapentine, and specific infections can also result in the milk turning pink.
Causes of Red Tinted Milk
Red-tinged milk can have various causes, ranging from the consumption of red foods or beverages containing artificial red color to the presence of blood from cracked nipples or areolas. Additionally, a condition known as rusty pipe syndrome can lead to the production of brownish-red breast milk. This syndrome occurs when the small blood vessels in the breast rupture, resulting in a temporary change in the color of the milk. It typically takes three to seven days for the milk color to return to normal.
