Why Consuming Excessive Amounts of Carotenoids Can Turn Milk and Skin Orange
When consumed in excess, carotenoids, which are plant compounds found in red, orange, and yellow vegetables, have the potential to cause milk to have an orange tint. This phenomenon, known as orange milk, occurs due to the transfer of carotenoids from the mother’s diet to her breast milk. Additionally, these compounds can also temporarily give a slight orangish hue to the baby’s skin.
Green Milk: Causes and Possible Explanations
While research on the topic is somewhat limited, there have been several reported instances of green-tinged milk due to the consumption of certain substances. Some scientists have noted that consuming spirulina, kelp, and other herbal supplements may contribute to the development of green milk. Additionally, the intake of iron supplements, the prescription drug propofol, and consuming foods containing green dyes have also been associated with breast milk taking on a greenish hue.
