What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar II Disorder

Bipolar II disorder is characterized by the presence of both major depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes. Unlike full-blown mania, hypomania is a milder form of elevated mood and energy. Individuals experiencing hypomania may exhibit rapid speech, racing thoughts, heightened senses, and a decreased need for sleep while still feeling refreshed.

Cyclothymic Disorder: A Milder Form of Bipolar Disorder

Cyclothymic disorder is a subtype of bipolar disorder characterized by recurring episodes of both manic and depressive symptoms that persist for a minimum of two years (or one year for children and adolescents). Unlike bipolar I and bipolar II disorders, the highs and lows experienced in cyclothymic disorder are less severe. As a result, individuals with this condition usually do not require hospitalization.
