Coexisting Conditions with Bipolar Disorder
When it comes to bipolar disorder, it is not uncommon for individuals to also experience other mental illnesses simultaneously. These related conditions may include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, and substance abuse. Surprisingly, studies have shown that nearly 10% of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder also have ADHD, while up to 60% struggle with some form of substance abuse.
Prevention
Ensuring early treatment is crucial in managing and preventing the worsening of bipolar disorder symptoms, although there is no foolproof way to completely avoid developing the condition. If there is a family history of bipolar disorder, it is advisable to abstain from alcohol or recreational drugs. Taking prescribed medications as instructed is also essential to prevent the exacerbation of the condition.
