Progesterone Usage
Progesterone, a hormone that supports the growth of the uterus during pregnancy and prevents early contractions that may result in miscarriage, is sometimes prescribed by doctors. Vaginal progesterone is available in suppository, capsule, and gel forms and is typically recommended for daily use between 24 and 37 weeks of pregnancy. However, it’s important to note that progesterone usage may not be suitable for all women, particularly those who are carrying multiple pregnancies.
Cervical Cerclage: A Procedure to Prevent Premature Birth
Cervical cerclage, also known as a cervical stitch, is a medical procedure performed on an outpatient basis at a hospital. It is done under general anesthesia and guided by ultrasound. The primary purpose of this procedure is to strengthen the cervix and prevent premature birth. There are three different types of cervical cerclage procedures commonly used.
The first type is called the McDonald operation. In this procedure, a needle is used to stitch the outer part of the cervix. This helps to reinforce the cervix and prevent it from dilating too early.
The second type is known as the Shirodkar procedure. This involves the use of ring forceps to pull the cervix while simultaneously retracting the vaginal walls. Incisions and stitches are made at the point where the vagina and cervix meet. This technique effectively strengthens the cervix and reduces the risk of premature birth.
The third type is called transabdominal cervical cerclage. This procedure is performed laparoscopically, meaning it involves the use of small incisions and a camera to guide the surgeon. The uterus is elevated, and stitches similar to the Shirodkar procedure are placed to reinforce the cervix.
Cervical cerclage is a safe and effective procedure that can help reduce the risk of premature birth in certain high-risk cases. It is typically recommended for women who have previously experienced premature labor or have a cervix that appears weak or short during pregnancy. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine if cervical cerclage is appropriate for your situation.
