What is Emphysema?

Vaccination: Preventing Emphysema

When it comes to preventing emphysema, there are several important steps to take. Alongside lifestyle choices like avoiding smoking and maintaining overall health, getting vaccinated is crucial. One of the key vaccinations recommended for individuals at risk is the flu shot, which is administered through an intravenous injection. By receiving this vaccination, individuals can significantly reduce their chances of developing emphysema. Additionally, getting a pneumonia shot every five years can also provide protection against this condition.

Statistics on Emphysema

Extensive research has been conducted by scientists to identify the root cause of emphysema; however, the conclusions drawn from these studies have been largely inconclusive. Nevertheless, when exploring the connection between smoking and emphysema, it was found that 85% of individuals diagnosed with the condition in the United States were smokers. The remaining 15% seems to be attributed to genetic factors, often inherited from other affected family members.
