What is Emphysema?

Understanding Life Expectancy and Complications in Emphysema

When it comes to evaluating the severity of emphysema, doctors often rely on a measurement known as forced expiratory volume per second (FEV1). However, it is important to note that this measurement alone does not provide a definitive outlook on a patient’s life expectancy.

At the most advanced stage of emphysema, known as stage four, the condition reaches a critical point with a significantly reduced life expectancy. This stage is characterized by severe symptoms and complications that can greatly impact the patient’s quality of life.

It is worth highlighting that individuals who smoke and have emphysema are prone to experiencing complications at an accelerated rate compared to non-smokers with the condition. Therefore, smoking cessation is strongly recommended for those diagnosed with emphysema in order to potentially slow down the progression of the disease and minimize associated complications.
