Physical Manifestations and Indicators
Experiencing exploding head syndrome can give rise to various accompanying physical manifestations. The abrupt awakening triggered by a loud noise stimulates intense anxiety, resulting in rapid breathing, increased heart rate, perspiration, and potentially heart palpitations. After an episode, it may take a while to regain composure, making it challenging to resume sleep.
Causes: Brain Stem
Exploding head syndrome’s exact cause is not fully comprehended. However, one theory suggests that it may be attributed to a malfunction in the reticular formation of the brain stem. This malfunction can disrupt the brain’s communication during the sleep shutdown process, leading to the occurrence of auditory hallucinations.
