Diagnosis
Foot drop can typically be diagnosed by a doctor through a physical examination. When a doctor suspects the condition, they will assess the patient’s gait and may perform tests to check for numbness on the top of the foot and shin. In some cases, imaging tests like x-rays or CT scans might be used to identify any masses or lesions that could be causing the problem. An MRI can be helpful in highlighting any nerve compressions, while an ultrasound can be used to check for cysts or swelling.
Nerve Testing: Understanding Electromyography (EMG) Test
Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic test that assesses the electrical activity in both nerves and muscles. This test proves incredibly valuable in identifying the specific area of damage in the peroneal nerve. Although undergoing an EMG test may cause some discomfort, the information gathered from the results enables doctors to develop a targeted and effective treatment plan.
