What Is Foot Drop?

Treatment

The treatment of foot drop is determined by the underlying cause. In cases where the cause can be effectively treated, foot drop may be resolved. However, if the underlying condition cannot be treated, the secondary condition may become permanent. Treatment options for foot drop include the use of braces or splints to hold the foot in a normal position, physical therapy to strengthen the muscles in the legs and improve walking ability, and surgical interventions.

In new cases of foot drop, nerve surgery may be beneficial in improving the condition. On the other hand, for long-standing cases, surgery to fuse the ankle and foot bones could be necessary. Additionally, nerve stimulation has shown effectiveness in certain cases as well.

Living with Foot Drop

Managing foot drop can involve certain adjustments to one’s lifestyle in order to simplify and enhance everyday activities while ensuring safety. Foot drop greatly impacts a person’s ability to walk, increasing the risk of tripping and falling. However, there are some practical measures that can be taken to reduce the chances of injury. Keeping the floors free from any clutter, removing throw rugs, concealing cords, and ensuring proper lighting on stairways are all effective ways to prevent accidents.
