Mental Changes Caused by Excess Mast Cells in the Brain
When an excessive amount of mast cells accumulate in the brain, it can lead to various changes in mood and mental state. Patients affected by this condition may experience symptoms such as anxiety and depression. Additionally, they may have episodes of confusion, disorientation, irritability, poor attention span, and impaired memory. According to the National Health Services (NHS), the presence of excess mast cells in the brain can also trigger headaches, migraines, and episodes of fatigue.
Severe Allergic Reactions
Mast cells play a crucial role in triggering an inflammatory response to defend the body against foreign invaders. However, an excessive number of mast cells can lead to a potentially fatal reaction to allergens and foreign substances. In systemic mastocytosis, where mast cells are present throughout the body, an allergic reaction can result in the release of an excessive amount of histamine. This excessive histamine release can then cause an anaphylactic allergic reaction, which is a medical emergency. Anaphylactic shock can manifest as swelling of the throat and tongue, obstructing the airways. Additional symptoms may include a weak or rapid pulse, wheezing, abdominal pain, and other severe, life-threatening reactions.
