What is Pulmonary Tuberculosis?

Treatment Side Effects

When undergoing treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis, it is important to be aware of the potential side effects of the antibiotics used. Before beginning treatment, patients will undergo liver tests to determine their susceptibility to the four main types of antibiotics typically prescribed. It is crucial to note that these antibiotics have been known to cause various side effects, some of which can be quite severe. These include nerve damage, serious eye damage, and jaundice. Additionally, there are less common side effects such as fever, numbness or tingling in the extremities, rashes or itchy skin, and other eye problems. It is worth mentioning that certain antibiotics may also reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Lastly, it is important to be cautious of potential negative interactions between the antibiotics and other medications the patient may be taking.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis Prevention

Preventing the spread of pulmonary tuberculosis doesn’t necessarily require patients to be quarantined anymore. With modern medicine advancements, simple preventative measures can be taken to reduce the risk of transmission. Here are some essential steps to follow:

  • Avoid attending school or work to minimize exposure to large groups of people.
  • Always cover your mouth and nose, especially when coughing, sneezing, or even laughing.
  • Dispose of used tissues in a sealed bag to prevent the spread of bacteria.
  • If possible, sleep in a separate room from non-infected individuals.
  • Ensure that infected patients have access to fresh air.

By adhering to these preventive measures, the risk of transmitting pulmonary tuberculosis can be significantly reduced.
