Having a body mass index (BMI) below 18.5 can indicate being underweight to the point of malnourishment. This condition is associated with several health risks. Individuals with a low BMI may experience deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, which can lead to various health problems. Several factors can increase the risk of having a low BMI, including weakened immune system, respiratory and digestive disorders, certain types of cancer, and osteoporosis, which is characterized by weakened bones.
