What is the Body Mass Index?

BMI and its Limitations in Assessing Weight for Individuals with Physical Disabilities

When it comes to individuals with physical disabilities, using Body Mass Index (BMI) as a sole indicator of their weight may not provide an accurate assessment of their overall health. This is especially true for those who have limited mobility, as they often experience muscle wastage. Due to the fact that muscle weighs more than fat, their body weight may be lower, resulting in a lower BMI value. However, this lower BMI does not necessarily indicate that they are underweight.

BMI and Ethnicity

Revised body mass index guidelines are necessary for certain ethnic groups. Specifically, individuals from certain regions of Asia tend to have a higher percentage of body fat compared to others with the same BMI. Consequently, they are more susceptible to health problems associated with high BMI even at a lower body weight compared to other ethnicities. On the other hand, some populations, such as those of Torres Strait Islander or Maori heritage, do not face an increased risk of weight-related health issues until they reach a higher BMI than other populations.
