Progesterone and estrogen, the two primary female sex hormones, play a crucial role in regulating the production and shedding of the endometrial lining in the uterus. One hormone that helps control the menstrual cycle and triggers ovulation is luteinizing hormone (LH). In the lead up to ovulation, both LH and progesterone levels increase. However, when progesterone levels are insufficient, it can lead to a lack of ovulation. This lack of ovulation inhibits the shedding of the endometrial lining and may cause abnormal bleeding.


Sudden Decreases in Estrogen Levels

Estrogen plays a crucial role in thickening the uterine lining. When there is a sudden drop in estrogen levels, the lining becomes thinner, and the tissue begins to shed. While the regular menstrual cycle is designed to flush out the endometrial lining, reduced estrogen levels can lead to issues such as intermenstrual bleeding, spotting, or delayed periods. This can result in a less stable uterine lining and disrupt the normal menstrual cycle.
