Why Does Ovulation Bleeding Occur?

Understanding Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition characterized by abnormal bleeding during ovulation in premenopausal women, typically occurring in their late teens or early 20s. This condition is caused by the enlargement of the ovaries and their follicles.

Studies have shown that PCOS is more commonly found in women who are obese or have excess levels of androgen, which is a male hormone.

Mittelschmerz: What You Need to Know

One common phenomenon that some women experience during ovulation is known as mittelschmerz. It refers to a dull pain felt on one side of the body, where the ovary is releasing an egg. Typically occurring about two weeks before the upcoming menstrual period, this pain can switch sides from one month to the next, and its exact cause remains unknown. In addition to the discomfort, some women may also notice a heavier-than-normal discharge and experience vaginal bleeding.
