10 Causes of Hip Pain

6. Hernias

Sports hernias, officially known as femoral and inguinal hernias, can make you experience pain in the front of your hip. A hernia can form in the inner groin because you lifted something heavy, you are overweight, you strain during bowel movements, or you experience chronic sneezing and coughing. Most hernias require surgical intervention.

7. Sciatica

Sciatica is the inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve. Your sciatic nerve is the biggest nerve in your body. It starts in your lower back and travels to right below your buttocks. Pain from the sciatic nerve can travel down the back of the leg. If you have piriformis syndrome, spinal stenosis, lumbar disc herniation, or degenerative disc disease, your chances of experiencing sciatica increase. A primary symptom of sciatica is buttock and anterior hip pain. You may also experience pain that radiates into your toes or foot. Weakness of the leg, numbness or tingling in the lower extremities, and leg pain are common symptoms of sciatica.
