Iron Overload and Hair Loss
Hemochromatosis, a condition characterized by iron overload in the body, can have various systemic effects. One notable symptom of hemochromatosis is hair loss, which can sometimes be mistaken for iron deficiency. People with hemochromatosis may experience thinning hair or notice a loss of body hair. It’s important to note that losing around 100 hairs per day is considered normal for the average person. However, if hair loss is accompanied by other symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause.
Heart Arrhythmias
Heart arrhythmias occur when there is an accumulation of iron in the heart, leading to rhythm issues. These arrhythmias can cause the heart to beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly. Some people may experience palpitations or a fluttering sensation in their heartbeat. The excess iron in the heart disrupts blood circulation and if left untreated, can result in congestive heart failure. One common early symptom of heart arrhythmias is feeling short of breath during physical activity. Interestingly, approximately 15% of individuals who are eventually diagnosed with hemochromatosis initially present with cardiac disease as their primary symptom.
