12 Home Remedies for a Toothache

12. Cold Press Treatment

Cold therapy is a pain relief used to manage a wide range of conditions from arthritis to toothaches. It involves applying ice or a cold pack onto the swollen part of the mouth. The swelling could be a sign of an abscess or infection at an advanced stage. Cold therapy works by reducing blood flow, which eliminates the swelling. It can also limit nerve activity for pain relief. Place ice in a plastic bag and wrap with a towel. Apply to the affected tooth for five minutes before taking a break. Repeat two or three times and remove the ice pack. You may repeat the process a few hours later.

Over the Counter Medication

If you cannot find any of the remedies above, consider taking over-the-counter medication. Most OTC medications contain Benzocaine, a temporary numbing agent that can provide pain relief. The two primary OTC medications are Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen. Since the two have different pain-relief mechanisms, adults can take both for the maximum benefits. OTC drugs can manage fever, pain, and inflammation. However, they can conflict with other medications and may pose health risks. Therefore, it is always advisable to consult a doctor if you have an NSAID prescription or are unsure of its effects. If the pain persists for one or two days despite using the remedies, consult your dentist to avoid oral health complications in the future.
